Prewriting Strategies:

Generate ideas, unleash your imagination, brainstorm purpose and genre

Complete ONE of the following suggestions and post to the blog.

1) Create a "graphic organizer" and briefly describe the short story elements.
2) Write a snapshot of the character, setting, or both.
3) Answer the who, what, where, when, why of your short story like an interview.
4) Freewrite: give yourself a time limit; write! Don't stop. Don't worry about spelling, grammar, etc.
5) Write a paragraph as if it were a pitch to a publisher and sell your short story idea.

  10. I just decided to write and see what I came up with.

Abigale Pritchard stopped at the old house and looked at the small piece of paper in her hand. “483 Tavern Avenue” it said. Her green eyes slid back up to the old house. Oh you've got to be kidding. She was about to assure herself she must have a wrong house when a frail hand opened the door and beckoned her in. She could not see the owner of the hand, but any chances of ditching now had come and gone. She sidestepped past the strange bronze statue that occupied the whole tiny front yard and slunk up the wooden stairs. They creaked under her weight and looked almost as frail as the hand she had seen. She kicked herself for being talked into this but she knew she couldn't leave now. Not after she had assured and reassured her sickly aunt that she would come and retrieve something she had lost here at his very house. How the owner knew she was coming, she didn't know but assumed that her aunt had called and told the woman she was going to stop by. Now she wished she hadn't agreed, looking at the door that loomed in front of her.

  11. Character Snap Shot-
The long brown hair swayed in the cool breeze. Her brown eyes searching the page, or maybe searching something else. Murcia was searching herself. Being alone does that to a person, being lonely for a long time does. The Rotos were new in a town that doesn't embrace new. The town never changing. At least the attitudes don't. Murcia could not understand why she was so outcast. Her mother, Chelo, always reassuring her she is far to pretty to be worried about fitting in. Atreo, her father, never failing to remind her that her family is all she ever needs, but Murcia felt there was a hole. She rose from her seat at the far end of the yard and started for the house only to be stopped by her own reflection in the window. Nothing unusual, but something was different. She was a smart girl, Murcia, but she had little common sense. Back in Vigo she often got herself into awkward situation, but she could always get herself out. As she looked at her reflection she caught herself looking into sad, glossy eyes. Soon realizing they were her own. Murcia no longer had that little twinkle in her eye. A twinkle that, when people looked into them, gave a sense of everything will be alright and there is always tomorrow. Loneliness has changed Murcia, and she decided she was about to change it.

  12. character snapshot kinda-
I'm gonna try to keep this story of Turtleman as happy as possible, but everyone has a past and it needs to be told. His name is Turtleman. Nobody knows his real name, not even his parents remember it. He lost contact with them years ago. The only thing they remember was those big green eyes begging them to stay, and his fascination of turtles. His parents did not like him, they rejected him, they disowned him at the age of 15. He lived on the streets for awhile, he met some kids along the way. He saw a lot of other kids in his situation and he decided to try to help them. This was how he got his start in crime fighting. Although he broke the law helping his friends. Stealing food for himself and them so they wouldn't starve. He bought food whenever he could, he only turned to stealing when he had no other choice. Now he is a professional thief with his gang of Mr. Freezer and the Hoginator.
